How safe is surgery for my pet?

As professionals in veterinary medicine, we know there are risks associated with surgery. To alleviate some of those risks we take several precautions before anesthesia is administered. Diagnostic testing such as a complete blood panel is performed at our in-house laboratory prior to all surgeries. Understanding the patient’s bloodwork makes surgery safer as we can identify underlying conditions that can cause complications. Bloodwork can also show how well vital organs like the heart, kidney and liver function. Knowing that these organs are in good condition helps us determine how much anesthesia to use and whether the patient is a good candidate for surgery.

How can I care for my pet after surgery?

Your cat or dog will require special care once they have been discharged after surgery. Post-operative care can determine how fast your loyal companion heals from their surgery. At our hospital we will ensure that you are fully equipped with the necessary medication and special after-care instructions. Here are some general guidelines to follow when caring for pet during recovery:

  • Limit their movement - no jumping, running or playing with other pets
  • Keep their incision dry and clean - monitor the incision daily and check for swelling, redness or signs of infection. Prevent your pet from licking the area. Do not put anything on the incision unless instructed to by a vet.
  • Administer medications exactly as instructed even if your pet seems fine.
  • Provide comfortable bedding and encourage them to eat.
