Spaying and Neutering

Spay and neuter surgery offers many health benefits that can prolong your pet’s life.

Spaying and neutering are elective surgeries which are highly recommended by veterinarians. Both procedures are known for preventing pregnancies in cats and dogs, however there are many other health benefits for your pet. We can safely perform these surgeries in our surgical suite and ensure that your loyal companion recovers quickly.

How are spay and neuter surgeries performed?

Neuter surgery is performed on male patients and spaying is done on females. Both surgeries require anesthesia which means our team will perform pre-anesthetic tests. During spay surgery an incision is made on the lower abdomen to remove both ovaries and the uterus. For neuter surgery a single incision is made in front of the scrotum so that both testicles can be removed.

What are the benefits of the surgery?

As mentioned earlier, the benefits go beyond preventing pregnancies. Here are some other benefits to having spay or neuter surgery:

  • Elimination of undesirable behaviours. While in heat your cat or dog may roam, spray furniture, become aggressive, yowling or even humping people or objects.
  • Prevents your pet from developing various types of cancers. If the surgery is performed before the reproductive organs develop you prevent your pet from developing mammary, testicular and uterine cancer.
  • Reduce your pet’s risk of developing sexual diseases or infections.

When should my cat or dog have the surgery?

To maximize all the benefits of the procedure the surgery should be performed before the patient becomes sexually mature. For some large breed dogs, it may be recommended to wait a little longer for them to have this surgery. This can prevent orthopedic issues later in life as their bones grow to their full size.
